Neck Pain

Neck pain may follow an injury or develop gradually with prolonged positions, repetitive activity, joint changes, disc problems, or muscle tension.

Struggling with Neck Pain?

Understanding Neck Pain

The neck supports the head while allowing a wide range of movement. Its joints, discs, muscles, and nerves can be affected by a collision, fall, sports injury, long hours at a computer, repeated lifting, or ordinary age-related changes. Pain may remain in the neck or extend into the shoulder, upper back, arm, or hand.

Some people notice stiffness and difficulty turning the head. Others feel an ache, sharp pain, headache, tingling, numbness, or weakness. The location and behavior of the symptoms help distinguish a local muscle or joint problem from possible nerve irritation or another condition.

Common Does Not Mean You Have to Ignore It

Neck pain is common, but recurring or persistent symptoms deserve attention when they interfere with sleep, driving, work, or normal movement. Pain that improves briefly and repeatedly returns may still need an evaluation. Early assessment is also useful after an accident when stiffness or headache develops over the next several hours or days.

What the Examination Considers

The Optimum Chiropractic team reviews how the problem began, previous neck injuries, daily activities, medical history, and what changes the symptoms. The examination may include posture, range of motion, tenderness, joint movement, muscle function, strength, reflexes, and sensation in the arms and hands.

Imaging or medical referral may be recommended when the history or findings suggest a fracture, significant disc or nerve problem, infection, or another concern that requires additional evaluation. Imaging is not necessary for every person with routine neck pain.

Chiropractic Care for Neck Pain

When the findings indicate an appropriate musculoskeletal cause, chiropractic care may be considered. The technique should be selected for the individual and adjusted for age, health history, comfort, and the stage of an injury. Movement guidance, exercise, and changes to aggravating work or sleep positions may also be discussed.

The provider should explain the goal of care and identify practical ways to measure progress, such as easier head movement, fewer headaches, more comfortable driving, or improved sleep. If symptoms do not respond as expected, the plan and diagnosis should be reconsidered.

When Neck Pain Needs Urgent Care

Seek urgent medical evaluation for neck pain with a sudden severe headache, fever and neck stiffness, new weakness, loss of coordination, trouble speaking, fainting, or significant trauma. New numbness or rapidly worsening arm or hand weakness should also be evaluated promptly.

Schedule a Neck Pain Evaluation
